Assoc. Prof. Alan Watson started his involvement with educational reform projects in Tanzania back in 1998. At the time, his involvement focused on getting young children to complete their primary education. Eleven years later, he is still heavily involved in reforms in the poverty-stricken area of Tanzania through the Katoke Trust. The Sydney-based foundation has been quite active in promoting changes in the East African region, with most of the proceeds going into building schools and establishing scholarships for young students, as well as other projects aimed at alleviating poverty in one of the world’s poorest countries. There has been strong support of the group’s initiatives, with support coming from various organizations such as the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, AusAID and UNSW School of Education.

Promoting Literacy in Tanzania

February-March 2003

According to UNESCO, worldwide literacy rates increased from 12 percent to 77 percent during the 20th century, says Alan Watson, an adjunct associate professor in the School of Education of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. "Still," he adds, "there are many that the literacy revolution has bypassed."

For more than 40 years, Watson has been involved in helping to improve literacy in one of the world's poorest countries--Tanzania. For his efforts, he received the International Reading Association's International Citation of Merit in 2002. The citation noted that "his vision ensured that his research was followed by application, leading to improved teaching and more opportunity, particularly for the disadvantaged."
