Vanilla Beans
The purpose of introducing vanilla in this poor rural area was for farmers to have a cash crop in addition to coffee (now bringing very poor returns) to supplement their incomes.
In 2009 we turned this into a glossy 20 page Vanilla Bean Recipe Book for you to download or view online. The recipe book is in dedication to the fundrasing efforts and support of Katoke Trust, an organisation that raises money and awareness for an area in Tanzania called Katoke (50km South of Bukoba).
Palm Oil
A trial planting of an improved variety of palm oil is being conducted in three plots in Kahumulo village near Katoke. The plants were obtained from the Jane Goodall Institute at Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika. Growth of the first plot in the two years since planting has been very pleasing but the oil bearing seeds are not expected to begin until the fourth year.
